Empurple – Wordplay Wednesday™ 06/06/18

Color Your Day Empowered

Confidence and personal power are closely related, though one does not preclude engaging the other. To accomplish a challenging feat, however, we must engage both.

How? Color your day with supremacy …

EMPURPLE (em purʹpɘl) vt., vi. – to make or become purple. [Of course! What did you think it meant?! WW #167]

Humanity has been empurpling the world since at least Neolithic times (latter Stone Age, about 10,200 BC), by cave artists, and eventually adopted as the color of royalty.

Psychological emphasis on the ancient empurpled power color, is demonstrated in popular, successful brands like: Hallmark, Cadbury candies, Yahoo! and FedEx. Oh, and let’s not forget Barney the Dinosaur!

Not taking any chances, Hallmark took empowerment a step further and incorporated a royal crown into their company persona.

While the word, purple, doesn’t rhyme with anything (in conversational words), that belies its power in history. It has even inspired hits over the decades in songs from silly to scintillating. “Deep Purple” by Nino Tempo and April Stevens lulled us into love at #3 on W-RIT/Milwaukee’s “Right Music Survey” October, 1963.

Good thing, too, ‘cause purple got a bad rap in the '50s from a hilarious hit novelty song. It needed a makeover after …

“Purple People Eater” (Sheb Wooley, 1958) hit the top of the charts and stayed there for more than a month, driving everyone nuts with its can’t-get-it-out-of-my-mind tune. Do you know, it’s about a “one-eyed, one-horned flying” creature that eats “purple people”? I swear

“I said Mr. Purple People Eater, what's your line? | He said eating purple people, and it sure is fine …”

For this week’s word, we’re using empurpled more as a color for your canvas of life mindset, than in the process of creating art, songs, or clothing.

Its mental motivation when worn with a positive attitude can exude honor, courage, royalty, and leadership. Fill your mind with purple, but just a touch is needed outwardly, to inspire.

So, why was the silly song creature here on Earth? He knew the power of purple: “I wanna get a job in a Rock and Roll band!

Word Challenge: EMPURPLE. Attract success. Think purple and how it inspires nobility of the mind, as you fit empurple into your week of colorful writings.

Cousinage – Wordplay Wednesday™ 05/30/18

We Are Family …

Summers are great for BBQs, weddings, and all sorts of fun family happenings. If you’re fortunate, there are a few attendees your own age, and/or some you’ve “known forever.”

Whatever your stage in life, often those you shared a childhood with have formed a familiar …

COUSINAGE (kuzʹɘn ij) n. – the state or condition of being a cousin, the relationship between cousins, kinship; 2) a group of cousins or of relatives. [WW #166]

Not all are lucky to enjoy the closeness of family, whether a mile or a thousand miles away. I thank our family values for the bond between cousins by birth, who are best friends by the grace of our cousinage.

Like me, everyone should have at least one cousin whose closeness qualifies as a pseudo-brother or sister. If you’re not so blessed, take heart …

They say we can’t choose our family … I beg to differ! “Cousin Brucie”* Morrow of New York City’s pioneering radio broadcasting fame, created an enviable cousinage with his fans that endured endearingly for more than fifty years. (*Read his story in Books 1 & 2 of Blast from Your Past!: Rock & Roll Radio DJs 1954-1959 and The Swinging Sixties.)

It’s comforting when some of our friends are accepted into a close cousinage, as well. I am honored that three of my best friends have stuck around to listen to me whine and carry on dramatically, through an extraordinary number of years; well beyond the scope of many family members. Cheers to finding family in your friends.

Cousins are many. Best friends are few. What a rare delight to find both in you. ~ Anonymous

Word Challenge: COUSINAGE. Whether biological or chosen, our kooky and comforting extended cousinage make life worth the effort. Let them know how much it means to you as you fit cousinage into your week of familial writings.
