Decalcomania – Wordplay Wednesday™ 01/09/2019

Wacky Wordplay Wednesday!

Sometimes when life gets tough you just have to laugh maniacally and lighten up a little to find your path back to sanity. I’ve always believed in a little inane to keep you sane.

Even Mayo Clinic says (with a giggle), “When you start to laugh, it doesn't just lighten your load mentally, it actually induces physical changes in your body.” To that end, enjoy …

DECALCOMANIA (dē kalʹkō māʹnē ɘ) n. – the process of transferring decals to glass, wood, etc.; decal [WW #198]

I kid you not. Straight from the dictionary. And here I always thought that applying a decal to your car window was just that—applying. I had no idea the process carried one of “them $10 words” in its pocket.

So does that mean someone who does the application is a decalcomaniac? C’mon, that made you smile a little, didn’t it? 😊

Jimmy B really does laugh a lot. Good advice.
Wonder if Jimmy Buffett was thinking about decalcomania when he sang one of my favorite oh-too-true tunes, as relevant today as it was those many yesterdays ago (“Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” (album/song released forty-two years ago: January 20, 1977) …

With all of our running and all of our cunning | If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane

Word Challenge: DECALCOMANIA. What is the silliest thing you’ve ever done? Write about it and laugh all over again, as you fit decalcomania into your week of inane and insane writings.

Thalassic – Wordplay Wednesday™ 01/02/2019

Something to be said for “short and sweet”

Did I forget this is Wednesday? Of course not! Well, maybe a little. Though posted late, it’s a short-‘n’-sweet edition that won’t take long, for either of us.

I have a reason—not an excuse, I don’t believe in excuses, they’re a sign of weakness—I always have a reason. I need the tranquility of this week’s word …

THALASSIC (thɘ lasʹik) adj. – 1) of the sea or ocean, marine; 2) of bays, gulfs, etc. and inland seas, as distinguished from the ocean. [WW #197]

Whichever meaning you choose, thalassic is a conveyor of serenity and the calming influence of great bodies of water. For decades, the ocean has soothed my soul’s ruffled feathers. In those times when Mother Ocean has been at more than arm’s length, I close my eyes and call on my memories for her thalassic nurturing.

Find your quiet place in this first week of the New Year … we all need one. If not at the shore of an ocean, a sea, a bay or gulf … close your eyes and let your imagination take you there.

Word Challenge: THALASSIC. January is an excellent month to walk a slower pace, inside and out. Its apt name originates from Latin for door (ianua) … an open door to new beginnings. You need a quiet space to find your door, as you fit thalassic into your week of introspective writings.

Cheers to a Happy and Creative New Year!

Manqué – Wordplay Wednesday™ 12/26/18

Find Your Bright Spot in Dark Year

Ah yes, we’re at that enigmatic time of year when we over-analyze the previous eleven months (or more), second-guess what-were-we-thinking decisions, and spotlight our shortcomings, even if basking in the height of success. ’Tis the season for …

MANQUÉ (mänʹ) adj. – 1) that falls short of the goal; unsuccessful or defective; 2) potential but unrealized, would-be, placed after the noun it modifies (also manquéeʹ; fem.)  [WW #196]

Fortunately, we are also in the season of eternal hope, as one eve of glittering fireworks gives way to the bright dawn of a New Year’s clean slate. With a new beginning before us, we can face what manqué results lurk in the shadows of 2018 and wipe them out with optimistic resolution.

Manqué makes failure sound less onerous, don’t you think? Yet it allows us to acknowledge that within the imperfect and flawed, potential may still linger to lift our spirits, with an accent on refreshing, rejuvenating, and rejoicing.

Ah yes, love it when we stumble on the occasional cosmopolitan word that enters into and enhances the English language. The dictionary is a reflection of our multicultural country and a gem such as manqué can add worldly literary flair to your writing, with a flourish.

Word Challenge: MANQUÉ. Even as you revel in the New Year’s Eve revelry, look forward to the morrow with hope and enthusiasm, as you fit manqué into your week of optimistic writings.
