Rebarbative – Wordplay Wednesday 07/12/17



Don’t Be Neutral on Net Neutrality! 

Admittedly, this week’s word provides the foundation for a “soapbox” article. As a solopreneur, I cannot stand idly by while affordable (term used tongue-in-cheek) access to the Internet—the lifeblood of independent entrepreneurs and small business—is threatened. 

REBARBATIVE (ri bärʹbɘ tiv) adj. – repellent, unattractive, forbidding, grim, etc. (literally: “to face beard-to-beard”) [WW #120]

We need to stand “beard-to-beard” in a cohesive voice to the rebarbative FCC, and demand the rights that citizens of the United States just celebrated, for the two-hundred-and-forty-first year:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” (Declaration of Independence)

“Pursuit of Happiness”: Let’s ponder that phrase for a moment … As a money-driven society, it’s tough enough for small business or solo entrepreneur to pursue happiness on a limited budget. But when we are faced with losing the ABILITY to make money using the same worldwide avenues as big business, THAT is oppression. A decidedly rebarbative prospect.

Word Challenge: REBARBATIVE. There are times in life when a “beard-to-beard” rebarbative confrontation is warranted. This is one of them. Consider how you can make a difference, as you fit rebarbative into your week of righteous writings.

Wordplay Wednesday™ July 5, 2017 – Enervate



When the Summer Sun Wants to Vanquish Your Vigor

Many words beginning with the “en” prefix augment something, often positive: encourage, energize, enchant … but we know for every action there is a reaction
 
ENERVATE (enʹɘr vātʹ) vt. – to deprive of strength, force, vigor; weaken physically, mentally, or morally; devitalize; debilitate. [WW #119]

Hence, my mood this week. July holds so many reasons to feel enervated. Beginning of the month of course, holds much holiday partying. That’ll do it!

By the end of the month we’re feelin’ the heat … does summer sap your vitality? Think about it now and prepare to zap July’s attempt to enervate your energy. Don’t fight it … harness it!

Word Challenge: ENERVATE. Don’t let the heat and doldrums of summer enervate your inner and outer power. Give it some thought and fit enervate into your week of peppy writings.

Wordplay Wednesday™ June 28, 2017 – Abulia



I Don’t Know … What Do You Think? 

Ah yes, when the San Diego County Fair is in town, I lose all sense of reason and anything resembling work is shoved to the side. That leaves me in a state of … 

ABULIA (ɘ bōōʹlē ɘ; Psychology) n. – loss of the ability to exercise willpower and make decisions (adj. abulic) [WW #118] 

Beyond that is, deciding which day (or two) to attend the Fair! Which in my case, includes Thursday, June 29th when Jay & The Americans will Rock us back to the 1960s & ‘70s! The only band to make an appearance in both my books: Blast from Your Past! Book 1 – Rock & Roll Radio DJs: The First Five Years 1954-1959, and Book 2 – R&R Radio DJs: The Swinging Sixties!

My bout of abulia will abate by the first week of July. However, I did ignore it long enough to give you another word to mull over in your own state of abulia.

Don’t fight it … give in and put aside the challenge of daily decisions to peruse the benefits of periodic abulia. Like all things that should be experienced in moderation, consider the optimum place and time.to indulge.

Word Challenge: ABULIA. Timing is everything. At the right time and place, fit abulia into your week of self-controlled writings.
