Skimble-Skamble ~ WordWayzzz™ APRIL 2023

It’s Spring an’ We’re Singin’ All Night!

I’ve been Spring-skimming! (I just made up a word!) It’s amazing what fun and interesting words you can find, simply skimming the pages of your dictionary. And you must use a handheld tome! The experience isn’t nearly as fun, online. While I’m skimming, I’m singing, just to make it more fun.

Check out what my skimming & humming brings us this month … I swear, it’s in my Webster’s dictionary and I am not befuddled …

SKIMBLE-SKAMBLE (,skim-bǝl-'skam-bǝl; 1596) adj. – rambling and confused : senseless. [WW #328]

Many words have come and gone in our dictionaries over the centuries. Sometimes, a word will be granted a few years of grace before falling into the “archaic” category, just before being dumped altogether.

Somehow, skimble-skamble has clung to life in the Webster’s dictionary since 1596. Let’s celebrate its tenacity!

We can all be considered in a skimble-skamble state at times—after a weekend of partying, in our first waking moments after a deep sleep, or when in a hurry to meet an important deadline. Scattered thoughts can quickly slip into a dazed and confused disposition.

Skimble-skamble is a perfectly inane word for an often-silly state of mind. But to a more serious connotation, it’s associated with conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s, or could even indicate a serious injury to the head.

For our purposes, we can apply skimble-skamble to a wide range of writings, from nonfiction/medical for instance, to a fictional character scene. The very nature of its spelling and pronunciation, however, can’t help but point us toward the silly side of things.

April’s Song of Note
I found just the hit-bound example on this month’s WFIL/Philadelphia April 2, 1973 music chart, to demonstrate a musical version of skimble-skamble.
"Drinking Wine Spo-dee O'dee" is the “modern” version of a jump-blues tune written by Stick McGhee and J. Mayo Williams, and recorded (around the same time) in 1949 as "Drinkin' Wine, Spo-Dee-O-Dee."
So starting with the slightly skewed title, skimble-skamble began, and Jerry Lee Lewis’ late 20th century version hit the bottom of the Top 30. Can you just imagine your book’s character singing this song?

Wine Wine Wine Elderberry | Wine Wine Wine Oh Sherry | Wine Wine Wine Blackberry | Wine Wine Wine Half and Half | Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee Drinkin' Wine Say what? The words speak for themselves and Jerry Lee Lewis was, as always, the energetic piano man ... 50 Years Ago this Month LOL

Word Challenge: SKIMBLE-SKAMBLE. May your words not be rambling and confused, as you fit skimble-skamble into your month of creative writings and casual conversations.

Write first for yourself … only then can you write for others. (L.Rochelle)

Virescent ~ WordWayzzz™ March 2023

Getting Your Shamrocks in a Bunch

Ahhhh, the beginning of Spring (we hope) calls for a special word of transformation. Breathe deep and observe the changes …

VIRESCENT (vǝ-re-sᵊnt; 1826) adj. – 1) beginning to become green : greenish; 2) developing or displaying virescence. [WW #327]

A perfect word for horticulture writers, right? Unfortunately, it often refers to abnormally green plants with a hormonal imbalance. While that may be technically (and boorishly) so, in the strict definition of the word, it can also be used in a more lyrical or literary definition … virescent strips cover the winter white and boorish brown, turning to fresh, frolicking green.

The virescent condition may also be caused by environmental influences, so there is more to this word than meets the green eye.

Even those of you not enamored with all things floral, may have need for virescent in your fiction writings, to describe the frolicking of the characters often observed around the middle of March, turning a tad green around the gills, at neighborhood taverns.

Oh, don’t get your shamrocks in a bunch—unless, you’re going to pair them with a bottle of Guinness for a gift! I am not vilifying the Irish—my heritage is Irish and yes, I loves me green beer on St. Patrick’s Day … or pretty much any day. And I still imbibe more than my fair share, but my virescent days are long behind me. 😊

Monthly Song of Note

Well, ya can’t get much greener than a crocodile, and this month, we celebrate Piano Day (March 29th) noting Elton John’s jaunty “Crocodile Rock”! Elton bopped it up to the top of the charts last month, and it’s still barely hanging onto KSTN/Stockton, California’s March 9th Top 40 chart at #32.
The toe-tapper is Elton’s homage to 1950s early Rock, and I just have to give it its due before it slips into the swamp … Well, Crocodile Rocking is something shocking when your feet just can't keep still ... 50 Years Ago this Month

Word Challenge: VIRESCENT. There are infinite ways to use this word in your writings, from chats about gardening to your St. Patrick’s Day partiers, as you fit virescent into your month of shamrocks and casual conversations.

Write first for yourself … only then can you write for others. Sláinte! (L.Rochelle)
