Quinquagenarian – Wordplay Wednesday™ 06/26/2019

Confounding Age with a Word and a Smile

Feeling old? Shucks. You’re only as old as you feel, right? After all, our sister-site says, no matter how many times you’re 39 and Holding againAge is a Number … LIFE is ATT-i-tude!

What can you do to feel young again? Smile! Or smirk. Or grin. Or flat-out belly laugh! You don’t even need a reason, and may find you feel younger instantly.

“Science has shown that the mere act of smiling can lift your mood, lower stress, boost your immune system and possibly even prolong your life.” (“Smiling can trick your brain into happiness — and boost your health”; 11/28/17)

So if sixty is the new forty, and fifty the new thirty, this word will take you ‘til you’re ninety (in any context) to master its tongue-twisting pronunciation …

QUINQUAGENARIAN (kwin’kwɘ jɘ nerʹē ɘn; kwiŋ’-) adj. – 50 years old, or between the ages of 50 and 60 (n. a person of this age). [WW #222]

The fifteen-letter tongue-twister is a mouthful. I’ve practiced … and still can’t pronounce quinquagenarian correctly three times in a row.

Surely there must be somewhere, sometime, in your writings or conversation that you can pop quinquagenarian out to the amazement and amusement of your readers and friends. Go ahead. I dare ya!

Word Challenge: QUINQUAGENARIAN. Think ageless with a twinkle and a smirk, as you slip quinquagenarian into your week of age-appropriate prose.

Yeasayer – Wordplay Wednesday™ 04/24/2019

The Yeas and Nays of Life

We all know the naysayers … never a good word to say about anything or anyone. As the dictionary says, they … oppose, refuse, or deny, esp. habitually.

Ignore them. Turn instead to those who lift your spirits every time you encounter them …

YEASAYER (yāʹʹɘr) n. – a person who has an affirmative or positive attitude toward life.  [WW #213]

That isn’t to say negative, frustrating, or devastating events never happen to them, it’s simply how they deal with the experience

Perhaps a short “cursing a blue streak” in the beginning, but then with some thought … and a little invisible effort … the yeasayer looks for a positive outcome in every negative event. Be it in their life or yours.

Every day may not be great, but every smile is.

Word Challenge: YEASAYER. Celebrate those in your life who make every day a life-affirming happening. Are you one of them? Terrific! Never underestimate the power of a smile, as you slip yeasayer into your week of uplifting conversation and writing.

Whim-Wham – Wordplay Wednesday™ 07/19/17

Make it a Whimsical Wednesday!

While some days are magical without forethought, others may need a little nudge.

Granted, few, if any of us lead a fully fanciful life (if we did, what would we look forward to?), but every day should hold at least one moment of magic. Even if it’s only a musing memory as you cradle a treasured trinket in your hand …

WHIM-WHAM (hwimʹhwam’) n. – 1) a fanciful ornament; bauble; trinket; 2) an odd notion, fancy, whim (the whim-whams [informal] – an uneasy, nervous feeling; the jitters). [WW #121]

It doesn’t need to be Wednesday to be a whim-wham day, but it does kinda feel fun rolling off the tongue, doesn’t it? “Whim-Wham Wednesday”!

OK, I confess. My day didn’t start with flights of fancy tickling my mind, so I needed something to boost morale and provoke an attitude adjustment.

Searching my mind for a positive track to run it on, I idly picked up a San Diego Surf Van mini-snow globe on my desk. Turning it over to stir the rare SoCal snow, I watched vintage reels of summers past, float by on the drifting snowflakes. With a silly smile, I’d found my whim-wham.

But like most things in life, even a winsome word like whim-wham has a dark side … at times, it can go from feel-good fancies and whims, to jittery and jumpy restlessness.

If it does, remember, it’s what you do the moment after that counts. Make it upbeat and lighthearted whenever possible, and you’ll find your whole day flows better. I’m enjoying my Whim-Wham Wednesday, how about you? (Whatever day it is …)

Word Challenge: WHIM-WHAM. Even the most thick-crusted all-business person has a heart that can be stirred by a whim-wham. Help them find their moment of magic as you fit whim-wham into your week of uplifting writings. (And I dare you to say whim-wham ten times super-fast! LOL)

Write first for yourself … only then can you write for others. (L.Rochelle)
