Xeric – Wordplay Wednesday™ 08/02/17

Desert’s Dog Days of Summer

Are you tired of being hot and sweaty? Yep, it’s summer. The salty droplets stream down your face at the slightest movement, and a cold beer or one of those frosty, fruity drinks with the colorful umbrella, punctuate Happy Hour.

Of course, there are those who live year-round in sweltering climes … and if doomsday futurists’ predictions of global warming manifest, we’d better start acclimating our bods now. As the world temperature rises, your buzzword for the week is …

XERIC (zirสนik) adj. – of, pertaining to, or having dry or desert-like conditions. [WW #123]

Even if we’re forced to master conditions the likes of Death Valley, it may not be that bad. As their website says, “Despite its morbid name, a great diversity of life survives in Death Valley.”

Its mountains are draped in winter snow, wildflowers come with rare rainstorms, and pockets of its vastness cultivate small oases for humans and wildlife to enjoy.

Most of us learned about the driest of all US national treasures, through history books recounting harrowing adventures of our pioneering ancestors. Most famously, the “Lost 49ers” seeking that shiny metal on which our country’s monetary system is built.

Yep, the Gold Rush of 1849 gave Death Valley its name, by a wayward group of families who followed a ne’er-do-well’s “shortcut” to California. After splintering off a couple of times, losing men, mules, and wagons, those who made it through the valley, bid a not-so-fond-farewell to “Death Valley.”

Deserving of its intimidating name, DV still holds the record of 134 d. Fahrenheit, for the hottest day on Earth, July 10, 1913.*

Take heart. If you want to know how to survive when our icecaps no longer cool the oceans, take a trip to Death Valley and learn your dry-life skills… and take LOTS of water.

Word Challenge: XERIC. Are you discovering new ways to alleviate the summer’s xeric conditions in your life? Cheers to a “dry” martini, as you fit xeric into your week of refreshing writings.

* For ninety years, a Libyan city held the record at two-plus degrees hotter. A dispute in 2012 resulted in an investigation which determined that taking the temperature over asphalt rather than native soil, disqualified it. The record was returned to Death Valley.

Bortz – Wordplay Wednesday™ 07/26/17

Diamonds Are Forever … Flawed

Sorry, ladies, and gents who love glitz, but it’s true. The majority of us will never own a flawless diamond, like the Winston Legacy, sold at Christie’s for $26.7 million. Sigh.

But does it truly matter? We love ‘em for the glitter-factor! After all, we still love singing "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" in Karaoke!

Humans love shiny stuff. OK, maybe that’s just me. Although, “bling” is a thing, so it’s obvious I’m not alone. And nothing glitters like a diamond, or a lovely design of tiny pavรฉ remnants … but beware … know of which is which …

BORTZ (bรดrts) n. – a flawed diamond used only for industrial purposes, esp. in crushed form for grinding and polishing [a.k.a. BORT] [WW #122]

It’s generally not too difficult to spot a bortz diamond, as the color—darker, and opacity—denseness, give them away.

But if you have never purchased a diamond (or it’s been waaaay too long), you need a starting point to know what you’re getting, and which yellow brick road will lead you to an informed choice.

This should be a bling-lover’s go-to site for making gemstone decisions: International Gem Society. Their tips, recommendations and gemstone non-bort, quality diamond, grading information are invaluable, and will point you in the right shiny direction.

Word Challenge: BORTZ. Don’t settle for it unless you need a new drill bit; or a fun word for Words with Friends. Admire your pretty diamonds, as you fit bortz into your week of glitzy writings.

Whim-Wham – Wordplay Wednesday™ 07/19/17

Make it a Whimsical Wednesday!

While some days are magical without forethought, others may need a little nudge.

Granted, few, if any of us lead a fully fanciful life (if we did, what would we look forward to?), but every day should hold at least one moment of magic. Even if it’s only a musing memory as you cradle a treasured trinket in your hand …

WHIM-WHAM (hwimสนhwam’) n. – 1) a fanciful ornament; bauble; trinket; 2) an odd notion, fancy, whim (the whim-whams [informal] – an uneasy, nervous feeling; the jitters). [WW #121]

It doesn’t need to be Wednesday to be a whim-wham day, but it does kinda feel fun rolling off the tongue, doesn’t it? “Whim-Wham Wednesday”!

OK, I confess. My day didn’t start with flights of fancy tickling my mind, so I needed something to boost morale and provoke an attitude adjustment.

Searching my mind for a positive track to run it on, I idly picked up a San Diego Surf Van mini-snow globe on my desk. Turning it over to stir the rare SoCal snow, I watched vintage reels of summers past, float by on the drifting snowflakes. With a silly smile, I’d found my whim-wham.

But like most things in life, even a winsome word like whim-wham has a dark side … at times, it can go from feel-good fancies and whims, to jittery and jumpy restlessness.

If it does, remember, it’s what you do the moment after that counts. Make it upbeat and lighthearted whenever possible, and you’ll find your whole day flows better. I’m enjoying my Whim-Wham Wednesday, how about you? (Whatever day it is …)

Word Challenge: WHIM-WHAM. Even the most thick-crusted all-business person has a heart that can be stirred by a whim-wham. Help them find their moment of magic as you fit whim-wham into your week of uplifting writings. (And I dare you to say whim-wham ten times super-fast! LOL)
